Wedding dress jackets

This early and unseasonable snow has proved a bit of an inspiration, or rather has brought forward post we had planned to do more in the depths of winter. But given it looks like this weather might continue, it’s important that 2010 winter brides make sure they wrap up warm on the wedding day (blue arms are not a good wedding look!).

Wrapping up warm does not mean wearing an aran cardi or a your usual big old duffle coat. We mean for our girls to be stylish and snuggly warm – snugglish if you will – like these beautiful ladies…

Wrapping Up For A Winter Wedding

Wrapping up the bride for a winter wedding means one of three basic looks: a jacket or coat, a shrug or a stole. Not going to get into shawls etc. in this post – with that blizzard outside, you’re not going to last long in a scarf!

We’ve also concentrated on fluffy and furry materials for that Dr. Zhivago look. Julie Christie’s Lara is a great inspiration for a winter wedding.

First up we have Jackets – we’ve opted not to concentrate  just white jackets, for a number of reasons, not least that nice ones are hard to find. Another is that like the second bride above, a contrasting colour fur (fake or real) can look uber-sophisticated, and also allows your dress to really stand out.

Coast can always be relied upon for wedding essentials, and their fake fur is super soft (I have a floor length one for about 8 years). This soft-grey cropped jacket from Lipsy looks almost real and a nice big collar will keep out the wind. A bit left of field, and almost what Carrie from SATC would wear if she were a winter bride, a funky spotted fur from Jaeger. A further step on the wild side is a white shaggy fur jacket from Miss Selfridge – looks a lot better in the shop than this picture – it’s really fun and 70s style. Finally Lipsy have another great cropped fur jacket in their collection we just had to include. We’ve gone fur-crazy!

A step up from jackets, for brides who want to show off more of their wedding dresses, and who have stronger constitutions, or are expecting better weather are Shrugs. These are shorter, almost mini-jackets, some with short sleeves, some with a little longer.

Alex Bridal on Etsy have a great selection of shrugs and stoles of all kinds. Bit of a cheat – but this lovely simple cardigan from Fenn Wright & Manson was too pretty, so we snuck it in here. Debenhams are always a good bet for more budget conscious brides. For the break-the-bank bride, Matthew Williamson has this gorgeous white rabbit fur embroidered with pewter beads.

Stoles are a nice touch of warmth around the shoulders, keeping out the chill but allowing full view of the all-important wedding dress. The bridesmaids shouldn’t be forgotten either – they’re going to be chilly too, so maybe this taupe feather shrug from Awear would be a good look?  For the bride though, Virtual village is an online store with a big selection at very low prices or even on the high street – Karen Millen has a pretty white long-haired version with ribbon tie.
