White Bridesmaids Dresses

The Royal Wedding Trend-watching continues today with a look at how the most famous sister in the world right now – Pippa Middleton, who shone as the epitome of Maid of Honour in her gorgeous white bridesmaid’s dress.

Tradition, and urban myth, tell us that a bride will choose hideous bridesmaid’s dresses for her bffs purposely to prevent them from taking any of the limelight on her big day. But fair play to Kate Middleton, she’s obvious a) very secure in her own skin and b) genuinely super close to her only sister, that she not only kitted Pippa out in a beautiful Alexander McQueen, but chose white as the colour.

There was something very serene about Pippa’s bridesmaid dress – it would be perfect for a wedding dress itself, so the danger was that it would outshine Kate’s wedding dress. Though Kate’s gown was effortlessly gorgeous in it’s simple lines, the perfection of the shape and the beauty of the lace applique ensured is shone against the foil of Pippa’s beautifully tailored simple white column gown.

The lesson here I think is balance – what the Middleton’s dresses prove is that colour doesn’t matter really, it’s about bridesmaid’s dresses that complement and balance the wedding dress. This applies regardless of whether it’s a more traditional full-skirted gown, a vintage rockabilly dress or a  boho bridal style – bridesmaid’s dresses should be chosen to complement and enhance the wedding dress.

So will White be the new Bridesmaid trend? Wouldn’t be surprised, and here are a few pretty options…
